Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses for young people in North-West Wales, are sponsored by Bangor University.  The 32nd series will commence January 9th, 2016, and finish on March 5th with the presentation of certificates.  From 2016 the Masterclasses are run by Bangor University Corporate Communications & Marketing.

Prof Lucy Kuncheva has today been elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

Lucy is just one of four people from Bangor University to be made a fellow in 2015.

With great regret we report the passing of our colleague Dr John Bowen Hughes (always known as "J.B.") on 28th February.  A tribute meeting was held at Neuadd Goronwy Owen in Benllech on March 12th.

He was a member of the Applied Mathematics Department from (roughly) the 1960s to the 1990s.  His initial research interests were in quantum mechacnics, and he later developed an interest in operational research, introducing several undergraduate courses in that area.

(We hope to include more detailed information in due course: all contributions are welcome.)

With great regret we report the passing of our colleague Dr Gwyn Chambers DSc on Tuesday, 9th December.  Gwyn came to Bangor from a post in Shrivenham in the early 1950s, and was a senior figure in Applied Mathematics until his retirement in the early 1990s.  His funeral service was held at Bangor Crematorium at 10:30 on Saturday, 13th December.  We hope to post tributes here in due course.
