Institute of non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics

The Department is a member of the University of Wales Institute of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics.

The Institute was formed to focus the research activities of groups within the University at Bangor, Aberystwyth and Swansea and provides a multi-disciplinary environment for meeting the challenge of modern rheological problems in industry.

It brings together expertise in experimental and theoretical rheology and extensive expertise in the computational modelling of rheological flows, including complex three-dimensional flows associated with industrial processes.

The work of the Institute is currently supported by funding from a number of companies in the polymer processing and oil industries and by grants from the EPSRC, the DTI and the EC. The Institute runs a regular series of conferences, the latest being a conference on Industrial Rheology held on April 5-7 2004 in Chester.

One of the main purposes of this meeting is to recognise and celebrate the 60th birthdays of Dr Martin Laun of BASF and Prof Howard Barnes of Unilever.

These eminent scientists will be giving extended plenary lectures describing their experiences in `Industrial Rheology' and also giving some pointers for the future. Contact: Dr G W Roberts
